A brand new aftermarket two position ignition key switch supplied under RMSTATOR part number RM05022, made as a direct replacement for the original unit fitted across the late nineties Polaris utility and sport range - Big Boss, Scrambler, Sportsman, Magnum and Xplorer in 400, 425 and 500 form. The key switch is the component that makes and breaks the main ignition circuit, and after two decades of vibration, mud and moisture the contacts inside the original barrel are usually the weak link.
A worn switch tends to fail intermittently rather than outright: the engine cuts on rough ground, the machine will not start until the key is worked in the barrel, or the electrics drop out and return on their own. This replacement is a plug-and-play direct fit with a four wire, single plug layout and a two position off and on action, measuring 55 mm long by 37 mm wide by 37 mm high. How do I know my old key switch has failed?
Disconnect the battery, then test continuity across the switch terminals with the key off and again with it on. A healthy switch gives a clean make and a clean break with no change when the barrel or wiring is moved.
