This is a brand new aftermarket 2-position ignition key switch for the Yamaha YFZ 450, supplied as a direct replacement to your original unit. The key switch is the master control for the machine's electrical system: it carries the main feed and switches it between the two positions, off and on, so that turning the key brings up the ignition and the starting circuit. On a sport quad it takes a hard life, sitting exposed to mud, pressure washing and vibration for the whole of its service.
Key switches fail mechanically rather than electronically. The internal contact discs erode with use, the detent loses its definition so the key no longer sits firmly in position, and water finds its way into the barrel and corrodes the contacts. The result is a machine that cuts out over bumps or when the key is knocked, power that comes and goes when the key is wiggled, a barrel that is stiff or will not return, or a key that turns to on with nothing happening at all. This replacement is plug-and-play, a direct fit and easy to install: 51 mm high, 39 mm long and 39 mm wide with four wires into a single plug, so it goes into the factory aperture and connects to the standard loom with no cutting, splicing or adapters. How do I know the old key switch has failed?

Water ingress and corroded contacts are the usual cause on a quad that is regularly washed or ridden through mud.
Will my original key still work in it?
No. This is a complete new switch with its own barrel, so it is supplied with two keys of its own and your existing key will not turn it. Keep the second key somewhere safe as a spare.
