This is a brand new aftermarket 3-position ignition key switch for the Can-Am Outlander 400 and 450 and DS 450 and for the Sea-Doo 210 and 230 Challenger and WAKE 210 and 230, supplied as a direct replacement to your original unit. The key switch is the master control for the whole electrical system: it carries the main battery feed and splits it across three positions - off, accessories and on - so that turning the key energises the ignition, the instruments and the starting circuit in the correct order.
Key switches wear out mechanically rather than electronically. The internal contact discs erode and the detent tumbler loses definition after years of use, and on machines that live outdoors or on the water, moisture works its way into the barrel and corrodes the contacts. The symptoms are a machine that cuts out when the key is nudged or when it hits a bump, a key that turns but nothing comes on, a barrel that will not turn or return, or intermittent instrument and accessory power. How do I know the old key switch has failed?
Typical signs are a machine that cuts out when the key is knocked or over a bump, power that comes and goes as the key is wiggled in a position, a barrel that is stiff or will not return, or a key that turns to on with no instruments and no starting. Corroded internal contacts also warm the switch body and can leave accessories live in the off position.
Will my existing key still work?
No. This is a complete new switch with its own barrel, so it comes with two keys of its own and your original key will not turn it. Keep a spare of the new keys somewhere safe.
