PeakRPM CDI Box for Kawasaki KLF 220 Bayou
KLF 220 Bayou 1988-1995 - replaces Kawasaki 21119-1226 - part number RMS030-104996
A tested PeakRPM CDI box built to the OEM design for the Kawasaki KLF 220 Bayou. It is a plug-and-play replacement for the original capacitor discharge ignition unit: three plugs carrying seven wires and seven pins on a 140 mm tail, in a case with 70 mm centre-to-centre fixing holes, so it mounts and connects exactly where the factory box did. Dielectric connector grease is supplied in the box.
The CDI box is the brain of the ignition system on this quad. It takes the pulse from the pickup coil, decides when to fire, and discharges the stored charge through the ignition coil. Inside it is a small circuit board that spends its life bolted to a vibrating frame in the weather, and when the components on it start to fail the symptoms are unmistakable - no spark at all, spark that disappears once the engine warms up, misfiring or cutting out under load, or an engine that refuses to rev past a certain point. This unit uses OEM-grade electronic components and printed circuit boards for dependable long-term operation, and each one is tested before it is shipped.
One important note from the manufacturer before you order: around 90 per cent of ignition faults on machines of this age turn out to be a failing stator rather than the CDI box itself. Test the stator and pickup coil resistances against the workshop manual figures first - it is a five-minute job with a multimeter and it can save you fitting the wrong part.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it fit without modification?
Yes. It follows the OEM design - three plugs, seven wires and seven pins, with 70 mm centre-to-centre fixing holes - so it bolts into the standard location and plugs into the standard harness on the KLF 220 Bayou. Disconnect the battery before you start. Wire colours may differ from the original unit, but the wiring configuration must be left exactly as it is for the ignition to work correctly.
What is included?
The PeakRPM CDI box and a sachet of dielectric connector grease for the plugs. The unit is tested before it is dispatched.
How do I know the CDI box has failed?
The usual signs are no spark at the plug with a known-good coil and a healthy battery, spark that vanishes once the engine reaches operating temperature, a persistent misfire or cut-out under load, and an engine that will not rev cleanly past a certain point. Because a failing stator produces very similar symptoms, test the stator and pickup coil first.
Why do you recommend checking the stator first?
The manufacturer's own guidance is that roughly 90 per cent of ignition problems are caused by a faulty stator rather than the CDI. A stator that has broken down internally will kill the spark exactly the way a dead CDI does, so a resistance check with a multimeter against your manual's figures is the sensible first step before replacing this box.
