How do I know my old CDI box has failed?
A failing CDI typically gives no spark at all, or spark that disappears once the engine and the box get hot and comes back after the machine has cooled. Other signs are a cylinder that drops out under load, a rev ceiling that the engine will not pull through, and erratic running that does not respond to fuel or carburettor work. Confirm the stator and ignition coil test correctly first, since a weak stator output looks very similar from the seat.
Why use the dielectric grease that comes with it?
The grease is packed with the box because the connectors on these machines live in a wet, salted, vibrating environment. Packing the plugs keeps water and corrosion out of the pins, which is one of the more common causes of an intermittent ignition fault that gets blamed on the CDI itself.
