This is a brand new aftermarket external ignition coil for the Honda Super Hawk VTR 1000 F and the RVT 1000 RC 51. The external coil takes the low voltage feed from the ignition system and steps it up to the tens of thousands of volts needed to jump the spark plug gap. Once the windings or the insulation start to break down, the result is a misfire on one cylinder, hard starting, and a bike that runs noticeably worse when hot or in the wet - problems that are easily mistaken for fuelling faults.
You must re-install your OEM spark plug cap(s) onto this coil. Once your original caps are in place the part becomes a plug-and-play unit, a direct fit and easy to install. All products shipped are tested. Electrically it measures 0.9 ohms on the primary and 13k ohms on the secondary, so you have solid reference figures for checking your original unit. How do I know the original coil has failed?
Look for a misfire on one cylinder, hesitation under acceleration, hard starting and running that deteriorates as the engine heats up or in damp conditions. A meter check is conclusive: this replacement reads 0.9 ohms across the primary and 13k ohms across the secondary, so a reading far outside those figures on your original indicates a failed winding.
Do I need one coil or two?
This listing supplies one coil. Both the VTR 1000 F and the RC 51 are V-twins with an external coil per cylinder, so order two if you are replacing both. Many owners change the pair together so spark output is matched front and rear.
