This is a brand new aftermarket generator stator, built as a direct replacement to your original unit on the Yamaha XVS 1100 V Star in Silverado, Midnight, Custom and Classic trim. The stator is wound with the highest grade copper windings, resistant to 200 degrees Celsius, on the highest grade lamination materials. On a large air-cooled V-twin cruiser the charging coils sit in a hot, constantly vibrating position behind the left-hand case, and heat is what eventually breaks down the original insulation. A tired stator on these machines usually announces itself with a battery that goes flat on a run, headlights that dim and brighten with engine speed, or a charging voltage at the battery that never climbs above resting voltage. How do I tell whether my original stator has failed?
With the engine off and the stator unplugged, measure across the three alternator wires: each white to white pair should read about 0.8 ohms, plus or minus 20 per cent. Then check the pickup, black to grey, which should read about 209 ohms plus or minus 20 per cent. An open circuit, a short to the stator core, or a reading far outside those figures points to a failed winding.
