How do I tell whether the IAC valve has failed?
The symptoms all cluster around idle: a speed that hunts up and down instead of settling, an idle that stays far too high, stalling as you close the throttle at a junction, or refusing to restart hot. Before replacing anything, take the valve out and look at the pintle and seat - a heavy carbon deposit can cause every one of those symptoms and will simply build up again on a new part if the intake is not cleaned at the same time.
Does the machine need resetting after fitting?
