This is a brand new ignition stick coil supplied as a direct replacement for the original unit fitted to the BMW S 1000 RR, S 1000 R, S 1000 XR and HP4 EFI. On these BMW engines the spark plug cap and the ignition coil are combined into a single stick coil that sits directly on top of the spark plug. That layout removes the HT lead altogether and improves ignition efficiency, but it also means the cap and the coil are one sealed assembly - when the spark plug cap wears, cracks or begins to track, the complete stick coil has to be replaced rather than repaired.
The unit is built to a standard that meets or exceeds the original equipment specification. It measures 138 mm overall with a 17 mm external diameter and a 7 mm internal diameter, and carries a measured resistance of 546 ohm across terminals 2-3. Every coil is tested before it leaves the warehouse. Fitting is straightforward: the old coil lifts off the spark plug, the new one pushes on and the connector clips back into place, with no modification to the wiring loom or the cylinder head. Yes. It is a direct replacement for the original BMW unit on the models and years listed above. What is included?

How do I tell whether my old stick coil has failed?
Typical symptoms are a misfire under load, a rough or uneven idle, one cylinder dropping out once the engine is hot, hard starting and poor throttle response. The rubber boot is also worth inspecting - cracking or tracking marks on the outside of the cap are a clear sign the unit is breaking down. A resistance reading well away from the 546 ohm figure across terminals 2-3 points to a failed coil.
Why is the coil combined with the spark plug cap on this engine?
BMW builds the coil and the plug cap into a single stick so the high tension energy is delivered straight to the spark plug with no HT lead in between. That improves efficiency and reduces losses, but it also means the cap cannot be renewed on its own - the whole stick coil is replaced as one assembly.
