A stick coil sits directly on top of the spark plug, combining the coil and the plug cap in a single sealed body, which keeps the high-tension path short and removes the separate HT lead as a failure point. How do I know the old stick coil has failed?
Look for a misfire isolated to one cylinder, a rough or uneven idle, hesitation and lost power under load, hard starting, or running that deteriorates as the engine warms up. Check the spark plug and the coil connector first, and inspect the seal - water sitting in the plug well causes the same symptoms as a failed coil.
Why does the seal matter on a snowmobile or quad?
These machines work in snow, water crossings and mud, and the plug well is one of the places moisture collects. The 38 mm, 10 mm high seal closes the top of the well so the high-tension end of the coil stays dry. Make sure the seal seats cleanly on the head when you fit the coil.
