Brand new flywheel puller in 36 mm x 1.5 right hand male thread, for the Kokusan type flywheel fitted to the Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono V4. A magneto flywheel is a taper fit on the crankshaft and cannot be levered, hammered or prised off. The correct puller threads into the flywheel and pushes against the end of the crankshaft, drawing the rotor squarely off its taper. Trying to remove one without the right tool is the quickest way to damage the crankshaft thread, distort the rotor, or crack the magnets loose from the flywheel body.
Thread size is the thing that matters most here. This puller is 36 mm x 1.5 with a right hand male thread, so it screws into a flywheel with a matching 36 mm x 1.5 right hand female thread. Check the thread on your flywheel before ordering, because a puller of the wrong pitch will strip the alloy thread in the rotor on first use. If the tool is supplied with a small cap, that cap is a crankshaft thread protector and sits over the end of the crank so the puller centre bolt bears on it rather than directly on the crankshaft threads. How do I check this is the right puller for my flywheel?
Check the thread in the centre of your flywheel. This puller is 36 mm x 1.5 with a right hand male thread and needs a matching 36 mm x 1.5 right hand female thread in the rotor. Diameter and pitch must both match - a puller that is close but not correct will strip the thread in the flywheel.
What is included?
The flywheel puller as shown in the photographs. Where a small cap is supplied with the puller, it is the crankshaft thread protector that fits over the end of the crank before the centre bolt is tightened.
Why can I not just lever the flywheel off?
The flywheel is pressed onto a tapered crankshaft and is held by friction over the whole taper, so it needs a straight axial pull to release. Levering behind the rotor bends it and can break the magnets away from the body, while striking the crankshaft end damages the thread and can move the crank in its bearings.
How is the puller used?
Remove the flywheel centre nut, thread the puller body fully into the flywheel by hand, fit the thread protector cap over the crankshaft end if one is supplied, then tighten the centre bolt steadily until the rotor releases from the taper. Do not use an impact gun on a partly engaged thread.
