Series Voltage Regulator Rectifier with Bypass Harness for BMW

BMW F 650 GS, F 700 GS, F 800 GS and G 650 GS, 1999-2017 - OEM 61 31 2 346 550

This is an improved SERIES type voltage regulator rectifier supplied with a bypass harness, developed for the BMW single and parallel twin GS models. A series regulator controls charging voltage by intermittently disconnecting the stator coils rather than dumping surplus current as heat, which is how a conventional shunt unit works. The practical result is that a series regulator runs considerably cooler than both shunt and MOSFET voltage regulator rectifiers, and less heat in the unit means less stress on the stator feeding it.

The kit includes a bypass harness that connects the regulator directly to the battery, taking the charging current out of the original chassis wiring and its ageing junctions. An alternative connector is supplied as well, for use where the original plug has corroded or been damaged by heat. The regulator is rated to a maximum charging current of 50 A or 500 W with a minimum charging voltage of 14.5 V plus or minus 0.5 V, and it is specified for operation from minus 20 to 85 degrees Celsius. The part reference is RMS021-108592.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fitting this require modification to the bike?

The kit is supplied with its own bypass harness, which is how it is designed to be installed. The harness plugs in between the stator and the regulator and then runs directly to the battery, so no cutting of the original loom is required. An alternative connector is included in case the original plug on your machine is corroded or heat damaged.

What is in the box?

The series voltage regulator unit and the bypass harness with its connector set. The harness carries 500 mm of stator wiring and 1000 mm of battery wiring, with three yellow, one red and one black wire across three plugs.

How do I tell my original regulator has failed?

A healthy charging system holds at least 14.5 V at the battery with the engine running. Below that the battery will slowly discharge and the bike may eventually refuse to start. A reading well over 15 V indicates the regulator has lost control and is overcharging, which will damage the battery. Discoloured or melted regulator connectors are another clear sign.

Why choose a series regulator over a shunt or MOSFET unit?

A shunt or MOSFET regulator disposes of surplus stator output as heat, so it and the stator are working hard even when the battery is fully charged. A series regulator instead disconnects the stator coils intermittently, so the surplus is never generated. It runs much cooler, which is the main reason these are fitted to machines with a history of repeat charging failures.
