This is a brand new Mosfet voltage regulator rectifier for the Polaris Hawkeye 300 and Sportsman 300 and 400 HO. It does two jobs: it converts the alternating current produced by the stator into the direct current the machine actually uses, and it holds the charging voltage steady so the battery is topped up without being cooked. On these quads a failed regulator is one of the most common reasons for a battery that will not hold charge.
Mosfet technology is the reason to fit this unit rather than another diode-style replacement. A Mosfet regulator runs cooler than any OEM diode design, and heat is what kills regulators. This one also carries overheat protection: if it is pushed too hard it shuts itself down temporarily instead of burning out. How do I know the old regulator has failed?
The usual signs are a battery that goes flat repeatedly, dim or flickering lights, or a battery that boils and needs topping up because it is being overcharged. Put a multimeter across the battery with the engine running: a working system should show around 14.5 V. A reading that stays down near battery voltage points to a regulator that has stopped charging, while anything above about 15 V means it has lost regulation and is overcharging.
What does Mosfet actually change?
Mosfet switching produces far less waste heat than the diode arrangement used in the original regulator, and heat is what destroys these units. Less heat means a longer service life, and if the unit is ever pushed beyond its limits the overheat protection shuts it down temporarily rather than letting it burn out permanently.
