This is a brand new pick-up coil, also known as a pulsar coil or trigger coil, supplied so that you can repair your existing stator rather than replace the complete assembly. It is the small sensor that sits alongside the flywheel and tells the ignition system exactly where the crankshaft is, so the CDI can fire the spark at the right moment. On the small-capacity ATVs and utility quads covered here the pick-up coil is one of the most common failure points, and it is often no longer available separately from the original manufacturer.
The coil is wound to a nominal 150 ohms and carries a single blue wire with a 670 mm lead, mounted on a bracket with 35 mm hole centres. Every unit is tested before it leaves us. Does this coil need any modification to fit?
No. It is built to the original dimensions, with 35 mm bracket hole centres and a 670 mm lead, so it mounts and routes the same way as the coil you are removing. Check those two figures against your old part before you order.
What is included?
You receive the pick-up coil itself with its bracket and its two-wire lead. No further items are listed for this part, so reuse the original fixings and any connector housing from your old coil where needed.
How do I know my old pick-up coil has failed?
The usual signs are no spark at all, an intermittent spark that comes and goes with engine temperature, hard starting, or a machine that cuts out and then restarts once it has cooled. Measure the coil with a multimeter: blue to ground should read close to 150 ohms. An open circuit reading, a short to ground, or a figure well outside the plus or minus 20 per cent tolerance all point to a failed coil.
Do I have to replace the whole stator as well?
Not necessarily. This part exists precisely so that a stator with a good charging winding but a dead trigger coil can be repaired. If the charging coils on your stator still test correctly, fitting this pick-up coil is usually all that is required.
