Series Voltage Regulator RMS020-106028 for Polaris Ranger 800 and More

Polaris Ranger 800, Indian, Honda TRX 420, Yamaha Sidewinder and Can-Am Outlander, 2002-2025

This is a series voltage regulator, part number RMS020-106028, covering the Polaris Ranger 800, Indian motorcycles, the Honda TRX 420, the Yamaha Sidewinder and Can-Am Outlander models across the 2002 to 2025 model years. Series regulation is the most advanced of the three common charging system technologies, and it is a meaningful step up from both shunt and MOSFET designs.

The difference is in how it handles surplus current. A series regulator only allows power to flow through the electrical components when the battery is actually charging, so it runs much cooler than either the shunt or the MOSFET voltage regulator rectifier. That means a lower current draw from the stator when the system is idle, longer component life throughout the charging circuit and far less heat stress on the regulator itself. The unit also has overheat protection, temporarily disabling operation so it can cool rather than burning out, and it has a compact mounting profile at 84 mm wide, 90 mm long and 32 mm high with 69 mm between the fixation hole centres. It uses two plugs and five pins, delivers a minimum charging voltage of 14.5 V plus or minus 0.5 V, handles a maximum charging current of 50 A / 500 W, holds open circuit voltage below 15 V and operates from -20 C to 85 C. The opposite connector for the main harness is included, as the original is frequently melted or corroded. Note that the 2006-2007 Can-Am Outlander 400 needs custom wiring: the outer and centre stator yellow wire pairs must each be spliced into a single conductor and connected to the supplied grey connector, battery positive goes to the inner terminal of the black connector and battery negative or ground to the outer terminal, the centre black connector terminal is unused, and a custom mounting bracket must be fabricated. Before fitting any application, verify the stator AC output, replace burned or corroded connectors, repair melted wiring and apply high-temperature dielectric grease on all connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit without modification?

For the listed applications it uses two plugs and five pins with 69 mm fixation hole spacing and a compact 84 x 90 x 32 mm profile. The exception is the 2006-2007 Can-Am Outlander 400, which requires custom wiring and a fabricated mounting bracket as described in the installation documentation.

What is included in the box?

The series regulator unit and an opposite connector for the main harness, supplied because the original is frequently melted or corroded on these installations. The product carries a 2-year warranty.

How do I know the old regulator has failed?

Charging voltage that will not reach 14.5 V plus or minus 0.5 V at the battery, a battery that keeps going flat, and burned or corroded connectors at the regulator are the standard symptoms. Verify the stator AC output before fitting a replacement, since a failing stator will damage the new unit.

How is a series regulator different from a MOSFET one?

A series regulator only lets power flow through the electrical components when the battery is actually charging, rather than continuously handling and shedding the stator output. That gives a lower stator current draw at idle, less heat than either a shunt or a MOSFET regulator, and a longer lifespan for the components in the charging circuit.
