This is a brand new aftermarket voltage regulator rectifier for the Kawasaki KLF 220 and KLF 250 Bayou, the KL 650 and KLR 650, and the ZN 1200 and ZN 1300. It is a direct replacement for the original unit - plug-and-play, direct fit, easy installation, with no assembly required. Every unit is tested before it is shipped.
The regulator rectifier does two jobs at once. It rectifies the AC output of the stator into DC the battery can accept, and it regulates that output so the system voltage stays where it belongs instead of climbing with engine speed. This unit is built around a higher grade of electric components than the original, holds a minimum charging voltage of 14.5 volts, and will pass up to 50 amps or 500 watts. When a regulator fails it usually fails in one of two directions: open, so the battery is never charged and the machine runs down to a no-start, or shorted, so the system overcharges, boils the battery and blows bulbs. Both are worth catching early, because a shorted regulator can take the stator with it.

What is included?

How do I tell whether the regulator or the stator has failed?
Start at the battery with the engine running. This unit holds a minimum of 14.5 volts, plus or minus half a volt, so a reading well under that means the charging system is not doing its job and a reading climbing past 15 volts means the regulator is no longer regulating. Before you condemn it, check the stator output on its own - if the stator windings are open or shorted to earth, a new regulator will not fix the fault.
Why do these units fail?
Heat, mostly. A regulator dumps surplus charging current as heat, so it needs airflow across its body and a clean earth to survive. It is rated for operation from -20 to 85 degrees Celsius. Mount it in the airflow, keep the fins clear, and make sure the earth connection is bright metal rather than corroded.
