How do I know my regulator rectifier has failed?
The classic symptom is a battery that goes flat over a few rides and will not stay charged even after a full overnight charge. The opposite fault - overcharging - shows as a battery that gets hot, smells of sulphur or vents electrolyte, and bulbs that blow repeatedly. Measure the voltage across the battery with the engine running: the system should sit around 14.5 V +/- 0.5 V. Below that, or above 15 V, and the regulator rectifier is the prime suspect.
