The voltage regulator rectifier does two jobs at once. It rectifies the alternating current produced by the stator into direct current the battery can accept, and it regulates the charging voltage so the battery is neither starved nor cooked. When a regulator rectifier begins to fail the first signs are usually a battery that will not hold charge, headlights that brighten and dim with engine speed, or in the worst case a battery boiling dry because the regulating circuit has stopped limiting the voltage.
