How do I test a solenoid?
With the key on, check for battery voltage at the small trigger terminal. If voltage is present and the solenoid does not click, or clicks but passes no current to the large terminals, it has failed.

What causes solenoid failure?
Contact erosion from repeated arcing, plus corrosion on marine and outdoor applications. Sealed units last longer where salt water is involved.
