The boost control solenoid is the small electrically operated valve that lets the engine control unit bleed pressure away from the wastegate actuator. By pulsing the valve open and closed the ECU decides how much boost the turbocharger is allowed to build, which is what keeps the engine on target through the rev range. When the solenoid sticks, leaks or loses its coil, boost usually goes one of two ways: it collapses and the machine feels flat and down on power, or it overshoots and the ECU pulls fuelling back to protect the engine.
