Starter Relay Solenoid for Honda CB and Kawasaki KZ

Honda CB 200 / 350 / 450 / 500 / 550, Kawasaki KZ 1000 - 1969-2007 - OEM replacement 35850-HM3-000 / 27010-1047 - Part number RM09003

This is a brand new 12 volt starter relay solenoid switch, supplied as a direct replacement for the original unit fitted to Honda CB and Kawasaki KZ machines. The starter relay is the heavy duty switch that sits between the battery and the starter motor. When you press the start button, only a small current travels through the button and the handlebar wiring; that current energises the coil inside the relay, which closes a set of large internal contacts and lets the full starting current pass through to the motor. Without it, the thin switch wiring would have to carry a load it was never designed for.

Because those internal contacts carry hundreds of amps every time the engine is started, they are a wear item - they pit, they burn and eventually they stop making a reliable connection. That is why an old machine develops the familiar single loud click with no crank. This replacement is built to a standard that exceeds the original equipment, and every unit is tested before it is shipped. It measures 47 mm long by 33 mm wide by 33 mm high, with two wires of 350 mm length, two terminals and two plugs, so it mounts in the original position using the standard rubber holder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit without modification?

Yes. It is a direct replacement for the original solenoid, matching the original dimensions of 47 mm by 33 mm by 33 mm with two terminals, two plugs and 350 mm wires, so it sits in the standard mounting position and connects to the existing cables. Check the number on your original unit against the cross reference table before ordering.

What is included?

The starter relay solenoid switch itself, with its wires and terminals. Mounting rubbers, cables and terminal nuts from your original installation are reused. If the terminal posts on the old unit are heavily corroded, it is worth cleaning the cable eyes at the same time so the new solenoid starts with a clean, low resistance connection.

How do I know the old solenoid has failed?

The classic symptom is a single loud click from the solenoid when the start button is pressed, with the starter motor not turning, on a battery that is known to be good. Others include a starter that engages only occasionally, one that keeps running after the button is released because the contacts have welded together, or complete silence with full battery voltage present at the solenoid input terminal. Burnt or pitted terminals are a further sign.

Is a starter relay the same thing as a starter motor?

No. This part is the relay solenoid - the heavy duty switch that passes battery current through to the starter motor when the start button is pressed. The starter motor itself is a separate component. The two are often confused because a failed relay produces exactly the same symptom as a failed motor: the engine does not turn over.
