How do I know the old solenoid has failed?
The classic signs are a single loud click with no engine turnover, a rapid chattering when you press start, or nothing at all from the starter while the lights and gauges stay bright. A solenoid that has welded its contacts can also keep the starter spinning after you release the button. Rule out a flat battery and corroded battery terminals first, since both produce very similar symptoms.
