This is a brand new aftermarket generator stator, built as a direct replacement for the original unit fitted to the Honda TRX 420 Rancher FE, FM, TE and TM from 2014 to 2021. It is supplied complete with the pick-up coil, the connectors and the rubber grommet already fitted, so the assembly is plug-and-play. Every unit shipped is tested before it leaves the warehouse.
The stator does two jobs at once on the Rancher. Its eighteen poles generate the alternating current that the regulator rectifier turns into the DC that charges the battery and runs the lights, while the pick-up coil mounted on the same plate gives the ignition its trigger signal. Heat, vibration and oil contamination eventually break down the winding insulation, and the result is a battery that will not stay charged, dim or flickering lights, weak or intermittent spark, and finally a machine that will not start. This unit measures 107 mm across the outer diameter with a 42 mm interior diameter and a 20 mm thickness, carries five wires through two plugs, and reads 0.6 ohms across the yellow alternator wires and 241 ohms across the pick-up coil. How do I know the old stator has failed?
A battery that goes flat overnight or never comes back up to charge, lights that dim or flicker with engine speed, weak or intermittent spark and hard starting are the usual signs. Confirm with a meter: across the two yellow alternator wires you should read about 0.6 ohms, and across the blue and green pick-up wires about 241 ohms, both within 20%. An open circuit, a short to the core, or a reading well outside those figures means the stator has broken down.
Why does this stator have two plugs?
The five wires are split between two connectors on this application - one for the alternator output and one for the pick-up coil signal - which is why the two plug leads are different lengths, 385 mm and 835 mm from the grommet. Both are supplied fitted and both match the original loom.
