How do I tell whether my old stator has failed?
Measure the alternator winding across the two yellow wires, which should read about 0.8 ohms, and the pickup between white/yellow and green/white, which should read about 238 ohms. Both allow 20 percent either way. Readings well outside those, an open circuit, or continuity from a winding to the stator core all indicate a failed unit. On a KX the usual symptoms are a bike that will not start when hot, an erratic or missing spark, and a battery that will not stay charged on the electric-start models.
Do I need to buy the pickup pulsar coil separately?
No. The pickup pulsar coil is supplied as part of this assembly, so both the charging winding and the ignition trigger are renewed in one fitting.
