How do I know my old stator has failed?
Common signs are a battery that will not stay charged, dim or flickering lights, and a machine that runs the battery flat on a long ride. Test the stator cold with a multimeter: black to black should read about 0.6 ohms with a 20 per cent tolerance, and any black lead to ground should read open circuit. A reading to ground means the winding insulation has broken down.
How do I test the pick-up coil?
Measure between the green and blue wires. A healthy pick-up coil reads about 196 ohms with a 20 per cent tolerance. An open circuit or a very low reading points to a failed coil, which typically shows up as a no-spark or intermittent-spark condition.
