How do I know my old stator has failed?
Measure the windings with a multimeter. Black to white should read 0.9 ohms +/-20%, yellow to black 0.6 ohms +/-20% and yellow to white 0.8 ohms +/-20%. An open circuit, a short to the stator core, or a reading well outside those figures means the winding has failed. A flat battery that will not recover and lights that dim as the revs rise are the usual symptoms.
How do I test the pick-up coil?
The pick-up circuit reads pink to white and should measure 280 ohms +/-20%. A pick-up that is open circuit or badly out of range will usually show up as a no-spark or intermittent-spark fault rather than a charging fault.
