Stator Ignition Source Coil - RM00033

Honda CR 125 R, CR 250 R 1986-1988 and CR 500 R 1986

This is a brand new ignition source coil, offered so that you can repair your existing stator rather than replace the whole assembly. The source coil - often called the exciter coil - is the winding on the stator plate that generates the high-voltage charge the CDI unit stores and then discharges through the ignition coil. If that coil goes open circuit, shorts between windings or drifts badly out of specification, the CDI has nothing to charge from and the engine loses spark completely or misfires and cuts under load. On these older Honda CR motocross machines the source coil is frequently unavailable from the OEM manufacturer, which is exactly the gap this part fills.

The coil is wound with the highest grade copper windings, rated to withstand 200 degrees Celsius, on the highest grade lamination materials. It is designed to work with all other OEM parts in the ignition system, so the original stator plate, flywheel, CDI box and ignition coil are all retained - only the failed source coil is renewed. All products shipped are tested. Fitting is a workshop job: the stator plate is removed, the old coil unsoldered and unbolted, and the new coil fitted in its place with the original timing marks preserved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fitting this require modifying the stator?

No modification is needed. The coil is designed to work with all other OEM parts, so it mounts in the original position on the stator plate and the rest of the ignition system - flywheel, CDI and ignition coil - is retained. The stator plate does have to be removed to carry out the repair, so this is a workshop task rather than a plug-in swap.

What is included?

One brand new ignition source coil for stator repair, tested before dispatch. The stator plate, flywheel and all other ignition components are reused from your machine.

How do I tell whether my source coil has failed?

Measure it with a multimeter and compare against the figures above - the big coil should read 336 ohms and the small coil 90 ohms, both within plus or minus 20 percent. An open circuit reading, a reading far below specification, or continuity to the stator plate itself all indicate a failed coil. Symptoms include no spark at all, a machine that runs then dies as the engine warms, or an intermittent misfire that worsens under load.

Why buy a coil rather than a complete stator?

On these Honda CR models the source coil is often no longer available from the OEM manufacturer, and complete stator assemblies for machines of this age are scarce and expensive. Replacing just the failed winding keeps your original stator plate, with its factory timing marks and mounting, in service.
