A brand new ignition source coil for the 1983 to 1988 Kawasaki KDX 200, supplied so that you can repair the stator you already have instead of hunting for a complete assembly. The source coil is the winding that generates the charging voltage for the CDI unit. The CDI stores that charge and releases it into the ignition coil at the moment of firing, so when the source coil goes open circuit or its insulation breaks down you lose spark completely, or you get a weak spark that fades as the engine heats up. Replacing plugs, caps or the CDI box will not fix a failed source coil.
This coil is wound from the highest grade copper, rated to withstand 200 degrees Celsius, on the highest grade lamination materials, which matters on an air-cooled two-stroke where the stator sits close to a hot engine and is repeatedly heat-cycled. It works alongside all your other original stator components, so the flywheel, backing plate, pick-up coil and lighting windings stay exactly as they are. Every coil is tested before it leaves us, and the coil is often unavailable from the original manufacturer, which is precisely why this repair part exists.

Will it fit without modifying the bike?
Yes. The coil is made to the original pattern and mounts on the standard KDX 200 stator plate in the standard position. Because it is a repair coil rather than a plug-in assembly, its leads are soldered into your existing harness and insulated with heat shrink. Nothing on the machine needs to be drilled, cut or re-routed.
What is included?
You receive the ignition source coil itself. The stator plate, flywheel, solder and heat shrink are not supplied, since this is a repair part for the stator already fitted to your bike. A small soldering iron is all the special tooling the job needs.
How do I know my source coil has failed?
No spark, or a spark that appears at kicking speed and then disappears once the engine is warm, is the classic sign. Unplug the stator and measure across the red and blue wires: the big coil should read about 170 ohms and the small coil about 24 ohms, each within 20 per cent. An open circuit, a badly low reading, or continuity between either wire and the stator core all confirm a failed coil.
I fitted it and there is still no spark - what next?
Try switching the two wires over at the plug. On these stators the coil can be connected either way round and the polarity matters to the CDI, so a swap at the connector is the first thing to check before looking any further.
