How do I know the old source coil has failed?
Measure the resistance from the black/yellow wire to ground: a healthy coil reads about 125 ohms. An open circuit reading, or a reading close to zero, means the winding has failed. In practice a dead source coil shows up as no spark at all, or a spark that disappears once the engine warms up.
Is this the whole stator or just one coil?
Just the ignition source coil. It is sold so that a stator with one failed coil can be repaired instead of scrapped, which matters on these older Suzuki 50s where complete stator plates are getting hard to find.
